Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a cosmetic tattoo artist in Australia?

There's no single national licence for cosmetic tattooing in Australia, but to work safely and legally you need two things: nationally recognised training and infection-control certification. The recognised qualification is the SHB50321 Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing, and you must also hold an infection-control unit — HLTINF005 or SHBBINF002 — which is a prerequisite before you can perform any skin-penetration work. Most local councils then require you to register as a skin-penetration business, and some states (including Queensland and NSW) require an additional tattoo/skin-penetration licence. At Artisan Training Academy (RTO 46085) you complete the Diploma and your infection-control unit with us and graduate work-ready, with hands-on experience on live models.

How much does a cosmetic tattoo course cost?

It depends on whether you want the full qualification or a single technique. Across Australia, the nationally recognised Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing typically ranges from about $11,000 to $18,000 depending on the provider and inclusions, while standalone infection-control units usually cost $300–$600. At Artisan, our SHB50321 Diploma is $12,000 — with a deposit, in-house payment plan and TLC Finance options — and shorter single-technique courses cost less. Each course page lists its exact fee and what's included, so there are no surprises.

How long does a cosmetic tattoo course take?

It depends on the pathway. The full Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing generally takes 6–12 months, because real competence comes from time on skin — healed results and review cycles you can't rush. Single-technique short courses (for example brows or lip blush) run as intensive 2–5 day workshops. At Artisan the Diploma is delivered over 39 weeks full-time or 52 weeks part-time, tailored to your pace, with practical training across 30–40 live models so you graduate genuinely job-ready.

Can I study cosmetic tattooing online, or does it have to be in person?

It's a mix — and it has to be. The theory (skin science, colour theory, consultation and infection control) is delivered online so you can study from home at your own pace, and the infection-control units can be completed 100% online. But the practical tattooing must be hands-on and in person — there's no safe way to learn needle work on real skin remotely. At Artisan, theory is online and practical training is at our Gold Coast campus in Worongary; interstate and remote students complete theory from home and attend block-training intensives, so you only travel for the hands-on days.
