Microblading was one of the most popular brow tattoo techniques between 2015 and 2020, but modern industry practice has moved toward machine-based methods that produce better healed results and longer-lasting outcomes. Here is how the two compare, and why our brow tattoo courses focus on machine techniques rather than microblading.
What Is Microblading?
Microblading is a manual technique where pigment is deposited into the skin using a handheld tool with a row of fine blades. The artist creates individual hair-like strokes by hand, cutting shallow lines into the upper layers of the skin and filling them with pigment.
While microblading produces realistic-looking strokes initially, the manual blade method has several limitations: results often heal unevenly, the technique is harder on the skin, and many clients are unsuitable due to skin type. Healed results can blur or fade unpredictably over time, and corrections are often required.
What Is Machine Brow Tattooing?
Machine brow tattooing uses a digital cosmetic tattoo device with a single fine needle to deposit pigment into the skin. The artist controls depth, speed, and pressure with precision, creating hair strokes (nano), soft shading (ombré), or a combination of both.
Machine techniques heal more evenly than microblading, suit a wider range of skin types, and produce results that fade more predictably. Modern brow tattoo training focuses on machine techniques because they offer better long-term outcomes for both the artist and the client.
What Is Feather Touch Brow Tattooing?
Feather touch is a client-facing name for hair stroke brow tattooing — fine, individual strokes drawn to follow the natural direction of your own brow hair. It describes the look rather than a separate technique, which is why the same result is advertised under several different names across Australia.
At Artisan, feather touch brows are taught as machine nano hair stroke work in the Nano & Feather Brow Course. The machine method creates the same soft, natural stroke pattern as a hand-held blade, while healing more predictably and suiting a wider range of skin types.
What Are 3D Brows?
“3D brows” is a marketing term rather than a technique in its own right. It usually describes hair stroke work, or hair strokes blended with soft shading, to build depth and dimension instead of a flat block of colour.

How much do brow tattoo courses cost?
Brow tattoo courses at Artisan range from $2,490 to $5,990. Nano & Feather is $2,490 for two days or $3,490 for three, Ombré Brow is $3,490 over three days, Ultimate Brow Techniques is $4,500 over four, and Brow & Lip Fundamentals is $5,990 over five. Every course is one-on-one and includes live models. The beginner pathways also include the HLTINF005 infection prevention unit and a full student kit with a PMU machine. A $1,000 deposit secures your dates and the balance is due a week before you start, or you can spread the cost through TLC with no deposit. The nationally recognised SHB50321 Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing is $12,000 — a $1,500 deposit plus ten monthly payments of $1,050.
Which brow tattoo course is best for beginners?
For most beginners it is the Ultimate Brow Techniques Course — four days, one-on-one, covering ombré, combination and nano hair strokes, with six live models and HLTINF005 included, for $4,500. If you only want hair-stroke or feather touch work, the Nano & Feather Brow Course is the shorter path at three days. If you want brows and lips together, Brow & Lip Fundamentals runs five days for $5,990. And if you want a nationally recognised qualification rather than a short course, that is the SHB50321 Diploma.
Do I need previous experience to enrol in a brow tattoo course?
No. Ultimate Brow Techniques, Ombré Brow and Brow & Lip Fundamentals are all open to complete beginners, and each includes the HLTINF005 infection prevention unit you need before working on paying clients. The only course that assumes experience is the two-day Nano & Feather pathway, which is for practitioners who already hold HLTINF005 — beginners take the three-day version instead. Every course is one-on-one, so the pace is set by you.
Do I need to be artistic or good at drawing?
No. Brow tattooing is a measured craft before it is an artistic one. The shape is mapped with callipers and a golden-ratio method, not drawn freehand. If you can follow a process carefully and you have a steady hand, you can learn it. Because training is one-on-one, you get as much time on mapping and design as you need before you go near skin.
Do students work on live models, and do I have to find them?
Yes, and we supply them. Every brow course includes supervised work on live models — six on Ultimate Brow Techniques, four on the three-day Nano & Feather, four on Ombré Brow, and up to eight across the five days of Brow & Lip Fundamentals. Models come through the Artisan working clinic wherever possible, so you are not left finding your own, and you are welcome to bring a friend or family member if you would prefer. Carlye supervises every treatment and steps in whenever needed.
How do I know a brow tattoo course is legitimate?
Ask for the RTO number. A Registered Training Organisation is approved by ASQA to deliver nationally recognised training, and its number is publicly checkable on training.gov.au — Artisan Training Academy is RTO 46085. Most brow tattoo courses in Australia are non-accredited professional development, which is perfectly legitimate and often the right choice, but only an RTO can issue a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment or qualification. Also ask whether infection control is included, because most councils require it before you can work on paying clients.
Are nationally recognised qualifications available?
Yes. Alongside the non-accredited short courses we deliver the SHB50321 Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing — on the Gold Coast, as a block-training pathway for interstate students, or by RPL if you are already experienced. The Diploma is where the accredited cosmetic tattoo units sit: SHBBCOS004 Provide cosmetic tattoo for eyebrows, SHBBCOS005 Provide cosmetic tattoo for lips and SHBBCOS006 Provide cosmetic tattoo for eyes. We deliver these inside the full qualification rather than as standalone units, because the practical units depend on the core skin, infection control and consultation units that come before them. Many students start with a brow short course and move into the Diploma later; the short course fee is not credited toward it, but the skills and your HLTINF005 carry over.
Do students travel from interstate to train with Artisan?
Yes — students come from across Queensland and interstate. Short courses run as intensives so you can travel in for a few days. For the Diploma there is a dedicated interstate pathway: theory online from home, plus three to four one-week practical blocks on the Gold Coast, with a scheduled video check-in with Carlye every fortnight in between.
Am I too old to retrain as a brow artist?
No. A large share of our students are career changers — people coming from hairdressing, nursing, retail, hospitality and administration who want a skill they can build a business around. There are no age limits on any of our brow courses. Because training is one-on-one, nothing moves faster than you do, and you get as much repetition on mapping, machine control and technique as you need before you work on a model.
