Who This Pathway Is For

The block-training pathway is designed for students whose lives don’t fit weekly Gold Coast attendance but who still want the highest nationally recognised qualification in the cosmetic tattoo industry. In particular, it suits:

• Regional and rural students in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and beyond, who can’t commute weekly to a Gold Coast campus and need training packaged into manageable travel blocks.
• Interstate beauty professionals already working in salons, skin clinics or as makeup artists in ACT, WA, SA, NT or North Queensland, adding cosmetic tattooing to their service menu without stepping away from their existing business for nine months.
• Career-changers in regional towns — nurses, traditional tattooists, body piercers or returners to work — who need a flexible study model that fits around family, work or other commitments.
• Established cosmetic tattooists seeking nationally recognised certification through a structured pathway rather than RPL alone.

This course is not suitable for minors. If you’re already on the Gold Coast or able to attend weekly, the standard Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing SHB50321 pathway is usually the better fit.

The Block Training Model

Block training is the engine that makes this pathway work. Instead of attending weekly classes at the Gold Coast studio, you complete your practical training and assessments in intensive, full-time training weeks scheduled across the year — minimising your time away from home, family and work, while keeping the practical learning focused and immersive.

How the Blocks Are Structured

A typical interstate student attends three to four blocks across the 12-month program, each block running Monday to Friday at the Gold Coast studio. Block training is arranged in advance to suit your travel schedule and your progression through the theory units, and additional ad-hoc blocks can be scheduled for students progressing faster than the standard cadence.

Between Blocks: How Your Week Looks at Home

The time between blocks is where your theory, foundation and home practice happen, so you arrive at each block ready to focus on technique on live models. A typical week between blocks for a remote student looks like:

• Around 5 hours of self-paced online theory through Artisan’s learning platform, covering consultation, colour theory and pigmentology, design principles, skin and hair science, infection prevention and business marketing.
• One 30-minute video or phone check-in with Carlye, scheduled fortnightly. These keep you on track, answer technique questions and adjust your study plan as needed. Additional check-ins are available on request whenever you need them.
• Home practice on the student kit (see Travel, Accommodation & Equipment below) using practice mats, so you arrive at each block with the foundational muscle memory already built.
• Ongoing support via email, phone and video whenever you’re stuck on a technique or have a question between scheduled check-ins.

The practical realities of interstate study matter as much as the curriculum. Here’s what to plan for — and where we can help.

Travelling to the Gold Coast

The closest airport to the Artisan Training Academy campus at Worongary is Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta, OOL), roughly 20–30 minutes away by road. We don’t organise transfers or partner with a transfer service — rideshare, taxi or a hire car are all straightforward options on arrival. We confirm your block dates well in advance so you can book flights at the best price.

Accommodation Near the Studio

We don’t have formal partner accommodation, but we do recommend specific options near the studio that other interstate students have used successfully. Once you’re enrolled and your first block is locked in, we’ll share our current accommodation recommendations directly. As a guide, students typically stay within the Worongary, Robina, Mermaid Waters or Burleigh Heads areas to keep the commute to the studio under 20 minutes.

Equipment & the Optional Student Kit

The $450 student kit is genuinely optional for all SHB50321 students — everything you need is provided during on-campus training and the simulated work environment. However, for interstate students we strongly recommend purchasing it. Because you can’t practise at the studio between blocks, having the kit at home means you can:

• Work through guided online practice sessions with Carlye on practice mats between blocks
• Build muscle memory on the same equipment you’ll use during your practical blocks, so block time is spent refining technique on live models rather than learning the equipment
• Continue developing your skills after each block while it’s still fresh

You’ll also need a functional PC or tablet with reliable internet, a smartphone or tablet for recording, and a printer for some workbook materials.

Fees, Payment Options & Enrolment

Course Fee

Full course fee: $12,000 — the same as the standard pathway. The fee covers your tuition, learning materials, on-campus block training, simulated work environment access and ongoing trainer support. Travel, accommodation and meals for your block visits are at your own cost, so factor those into your overall budget.
