Instead of completing the full Diploma coursework, you demonstrate your existing competence through documented evidence — case studies, before-and-after work, client testimonials, prior training, and ongoing professional development — assessed against the same SHB50321 units.
On successful completion of the RPL process, you receive the same nationally recognised SHB50321 Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing (Eyebrows, Lips, Eyes) as students who complete the full program. Same qualification, same RTO (Artisan Training Academy, RTO 46085), assessed by the same lead trainer — Carlye Pymble — who is the lead assessor for this pathway.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process formally recognised under Australia’s nationally accredited training system. It allows experienced practitioners to be assessed against the units of competency in a nationally recognised qualification using evidence of skills and knowledge already acquired — through paid work, prior training, professional development or relevant unpaid experience — rather than completing coursework from scratch.
For cosmetic tattooists who have been performing brow, lip and eye treatments professionally for years, RPL is the appropriate pathway. You aren’t taught what you already know — you are assessed on what you can already do, to the same SHB50321 standards as students completing the full Diploma.
Who is Eligible for RPL?
RPL for SHB50321 is designed for practitioners with demonstrable, current cosmetic tattoo competence. To be eligible, you should meet the following criteria:
Substantial Industry Experience
Considerable hands-on experience performing cosmetic tattoo procedures — brows, lips, eyeliner, and ideally exposure to corrections, camouflage and removal awareness. We assess depth and currency, not just years on paper.
Advanced Practical Skills
Demonstrated technique across the three practical specialisation units — SHBBCOS004 Eyebrows, SHBBCOS005 Lips and SHBBCOS006 Eyes. Evidence of natural-result outcomes and, ideally, hyperrealism techniques such as nano strokes.
Comprehensive Portfolio
A strong portfolio of your work and client outcomes, including before-and-after photography, client testimonials and a clear professional journey. Healed results are weighted more heavily than fresh-work photos.
Ongoing Professional Development
Documented evidence of continuous professional development and adherence to industry best practice — previous training certificates, workshops, masterclasses, and ideally a current infection control unit such as HLTINF005 Maintain infection prevention for skin penetration treatments or SHBBINF002.

Evidence Requirements
RPL is an evidence-based assessment, so the quality and completeness of your evidence directly affects both the timeframe and the outcome. The evidence you provide must be:
- Authenticated — verifiable as your own work (signed statements from employers, dated photographs, client consent for testimonial use)
- Current — reflecting your present competence, not skills you last used years ago
- Sufficient — covering every Element and Performance Criterion in each unit, not just selected highlights
Typical evidence applicants submit includes:
- Detailed client case studies showing consultation, design, treatment and healed result
- Before-and-after photographs (fresh and healed) of brow, lip and eye work
- Written testimonials and consent letters from clients
- Certificates from previous formal training (including any prior cosmetic tattoo courses)
- Records of professional development activities — workshops, masterclasses, conferences
- Documented infection control practices, workspace setup, and consumables management

The RPL Process
Start with a no-obligation conversation with our team. We discuss your experience, the depth of your portfolio, and your goals. This stage establishes whether RPL is the right pathway for you, or whether a partial RPL with gap training (or the full Diploma) is a better fit. No application is submitted at this point.
Once eligibility is confirmed, you submit a formal RPL application together with your evidence portfolio. We’ll provide an evidence checklist mapped to each SHB50321 unit so you know exactly what we need and in what format.
Carlye Pymble, the lead assessor, reviews your application and evidence against the SHB50321 units. Assessment is primarily evidence-based; a practical demonstration may be requested in addition where the evidence is borderline for one or more units, or where the assessor needs to verify current competence.
You receive a detailed written outcome. If your evidence covers all units, you are awarded the nationally recognised SHB50321 Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing. If specific units can’t be evidenced to the required standard, we outline targeted gap training so you complete only what’s needed — not the whole Diploma. See the Gap Training section below.

How You’ll Be Assessed
RPL assessment is conducted against the same SHB50321 standards as the full Diploma, using three evidence types adapted for an experience-based pathway:
Your documented body of work assessed against each unit’s Elements and Performance Criteria. This is the largest single component of an RPL assessment for experienced practitioners.
Written or oral knowledge assessment covering consultation, colour theory and pigmentology, design principles, skin and hair science and infection prevention. Open book and untimed.
A live or video-submitted practical demonstration on one or more of the three practical units — requested by the assessor where the portfolio evidence is borderline or where current competence needs additional verification. Not required in every RPL case.
Gap Training If Required
If your evidence covers most but not all units, the outcome is partial RPL with targeted gap training — you complete only the specific units where evidence was insufficient, not the whole Diploma. This is common and not a failure of the process. Many experienced practitioners are strong across two of the three practical specialisations and need targeted gap training on the third.
Gap training for a practical unit (SHBBCOS004 eyebrows, SHBBCOS005 lips or SHBBCOS006 eyes) is delivered either as:
- A 5-day block at the Artisan Training Academy Gold Coast studio (Monday to Friday), or
- Across 5 Fridays in the working studio if a block schedule doesn’t suit your commitments
Gap training per practical unit is $2,300, added to the base RPL fee. If you need gap training on theory units, this is handled differently — speak with us during your initial consultation. Students who need gap training on the entire practical specialisation set may find the Remote & Interstate Diploma pathway a more cost-effective route.

Fees, Payment Options & Enrolment
RPL Base Fee
Base RPL fee: $5,000. This covers all theory units plus the assessment of your practical evidence portfolio. Gap training on any practical unit (if required) is $2,300 per unit, added on top.
In-House Payment Plan with Artisan
A deposit of $1,500 to secure your enrolment and access to the first units of study, followed by 5 monthly payments of $700 (based on the $5,000 base RPL fee).
Payment Plans Through TLC
- Flexible repayments up to 84 months
- TLC Finance from $40 per week (based on a 60-month plan)
- No deposit required and no exit fees for early payout
- Efficient application and approval process
